Foot and ankle surgeons specialize in the treatment of all musculoskeletal conditions beginning from just below the knee down to the tips of the toes.  There are many different conditions affecting the foot and the orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon addresses them all.

One of the most common problems are bunions and other conditions related to the big toe.  Orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeons are trained in numerous techniques for patients with these problems, and the options vary based on the patient.  Often accompanying problems of the big toe are associated problems to the lesser toes.  The orthopaedic surgeon is adept at addressing the problems but more importantly the root cause of the pain and deformities to prevent it from reoccuring.

Another major condition that affects many people is arthritis of the foot.  Arthritis may present in many forms from patient to patient, and it is the job of the orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon to identify the location and discuss options.  Often patients with arthritis in the foot and ankle are best treated with a fusion, which literally means taking two bones and making them grow together into one.  Although this seems like a hard concept to understand, patients do very well from fusions.  The numerous small joints in the foot and ankle allow the orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon to do selective fusions and still preserve function.

One of the more recent advances in orthopaedics is the total ankle replacement.  There is a select population of patients who may benefit from a total ankle replacement.  The concept is the same is a total hip or knee replacement, where we replace the arthritic joint with a new prosthetic joint.

Athletes in all realms have frequent injuries to the foot and ankle and the orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon is specialty trained to treat these injuries and fractures.

There are many other conditions involving the foot and ankle and our foot and ankle surgeons are specialty trained to care for all aspects of the foot and ankle.  We encourage you to explore the patient education page to learn more about your condition and how Dr. Matuszak can help manage your problems.
